The Story of Tachyon

Almost every year, us yoyofriends will release a mainstream flagship yoyo, the likes of Hummingbird, Peregrine, and the Vulture. For us, a flagship needs to have unprecedented performance, specialty that makes the yoyo unique, and pushing the possibility of manufacturing. We would like to introduce our newest flagship yoyo of 2022, the Tachyon. 

The idea of a flagship is very daunting, we have to make a yoyo that not only stands up to our previous three, but also has stand out characteristics. The Tachyon was created with one thing in mind, speed. This is a huge obstacle as the hummingbird in our lineup is already one of the fastest yoyo out there. What can we do to go even faster while the yoyo is still controllable? 

To tackle this project we took a deep dive on understanding the speed of the yoyo. We found out there are two main parts to the overall speed of a yoyo, acceleration and sustained top speed. We want to tackle both parts with this design. A yoyo that can change direction really fast while still having the control in high stress, high speed situations like fast rail combos.

We decided to still use the classic 7068 + SS setup, our bread and butter to bring out the most performance in our mainstream yoyos. We also decided on the classic wrapped around outer ring to ensure maximum stability and power. Weight is one of the main factors on acceleration, we lowered the weight as low as possible while still keeping enough control and power. The extreme weight distribution of the outer ring design perfectly counteracts the loss of power due to weight decrease. 

We always learn more and more about yoyo design from our past lineup. Last year's flagship was the Vulture. What surprised us on the vulture is how much the stability increased by implementing a H shape profile. In order to push the weight even lower on the Tachyon while keeping it stable, we decided to implement some of the H shape design from the Vulture. Here is a conundrum, implementing the H shape element in a yoyo will make the yoyo slower compared to a classic V shape. We would need to implement a H shape where the decrease in speed is well less than the increase in speed from weight cutting. The solution was to implement the H shape near the outside. Doing this still makes the yoyo V shape dominate while still having the enhanced stability and power improvement from elements of the H shape. 

We all know that yoyofriends is part FPM, one of the best yoyo manufacturer. Each yoyo from yoyofriends is a showcase FPM is capable of. When we made the TISS hummingbird. We also have an ultra light prototype that came along in the package, the goal of that yoyo is to prototype and remake the TISS hummingbird with just aluminum, thus making the wall of that yoyo only 0.8mm thin, the thinnest aluminum wall in our lineup yet. We utilized that experience and implemented the thickness of 0.8mm wall on the tachyon as we want as much center and rim weight as possible to ensure the fastest speed. We know this is a very difficult task to do as it doubles the manufacturing difficulty. The yoyo can be deformed due to tool wear, the main body can also be burnt and deformed due to the high temperatures in the anodizing tank during oxidation. However after numerous testing and tweaking, we have succeeded in making the tachyon meet and exceed our expectations. 

The result is incredible. Tachyon is without a doubt our fastest performance yoyo we've ever made. Dethroning our hummingbird in speed in just about every way. When playing with the Tachyon you will feel never before seen acceleration and sustained top speed while having the power and control to do all your tricks. You will feel the savagery of power and the burst of speed upon every throw. 

We picked the name Tachyon because it perfectly fits the ideology of the yoyo, tachyon is a hypothetical particle that travels faster than light. A perfect caricature of what this yoyo stands for. It is also a homage to one of our new particle naming schemes that started with the Baryon.
