Introducing the yoyofriends Recoil, our widest and most powerful yoyo yet. The general concept of a super wide yoyo started back in mid 2025. We realized a lot of the newer generation of players are using super wide yoyos ranging from around 55mm to 60mm in width. Here at yoyofriends, our widest yoyo at that time was the Armageddon at 53mm. Our ultra competition yoyo like the Replicant and Netrunner was still around low 50mm in width. We desperately need to make something that caters to the upcoming new generation of players. Especially if they want to join team yoyofriends.

The original project was to start with a 56mm wide bimetal with a whole new design. However after 2 prototypes, we still could not nail the feel of the yoyo. With ever changing meta shifting in the competition scene, some players are now preferring around 60mm yoyos in width. With this urgency, we started multiple projects on ultra wide yoyos. Recoil is the first and one of those projects.

To design an ultrawide yoyo, we want to base on a successful series and stretch the design horizontally. We looked into multiple series within our lineup to see which one will suit our first ultra wide the most. We found out the cut series has distinct lines in the profile. This will make the yoyo look more interesting, especially when the aluminum body is exaggerated when the yoyo is very wide. We found the ultracut profile in the series is a stand out. Ultracut, being our 50mm monometal, is the gold standard for price to performance in the marketplace. So for the recoil profile, it is heavily inspired by the Ultracut.

Then we need to sort out the spec. First is the width. We want to go big or go home as the width meta is ever changing for some players. We asked some competition players and some of them prefer it around 60mm. To ensure this yoyo's relevance in the future in this extreme competition yoyo space. All while not being overkill. We decided 62mm is a good width. Then it's the diameter. We still want to make this yoyo viable doing tech and chopstick tricks. Knowing that too small of a diameter with a large width is detrimental to the stability of the yoyo. We decided 57mm is a good middle ground. The stability can be increased with the massive rings. Traditionally, we prefer a more dense, thicker and concentrated rim for a more extreme outer rim weight. However at this size, the start of the SS ring is so far away from the center point. We can spread the ring thinner and wider to hit the 62mm spec, while having a very decent weight on them. The weight of the yoyo needs to be high at this width, because too light will decrease stability. So we started around 67.4g for the first design. Finally, the axle is increased to 10mm from 8mm to combat the torque increase. With all the specs and design approved by both the manu and player team. We started the prototype.

The player team was immediately blown away with the prototype. It plays nimble yet undoubtedly wide. We are all very excited as we finally solve the lack of the ultra wide yoyo problem in our lineup. The only changes we suggested is to slightly increase the weight to enhance the stability and power at this width. With the final projected production weight increased to around 67.8g. We greenlit it for production immediately.

3 players, Jonathan, Yahoo and Harry all immediately switched to Recoil for competition. Harry then placed 1st in EYYC 1A pro semi finals and 3rd in EYYC 1A Pro finals. Jonathan placed 1st in Sydney Regionals 1A finals. These accomplishments further ensured us that Recoil is a successful ultra wide competition yoyo.
