The yoyofriends cut series has always been about high performance yoyos at a lower budget, in their perspective material construction. In the cut series, we have the monometal shortcut and ultracut, titanium crosscut and the bimetal papercut.

As early as 2021, yoyofriends has been thinking about doing a hybrid yoyo. The concept never came into fruition due to lack of experience with design and manufacturing.

In 2024 we are dedicated to making a hybrid yoyo. The model we chose to base it on is the papercut. Papercut has the outer ring bimaterial construction that a hybrid yoyo can easily replicate. It also has a massive ring, making it a standout if we can somewhat replicate it on our hybrid yoyo.

The design construction of prototype 1 has an aluminum hub and spacer in the center. Polycarbonate body and massive stainless steel rings for the rest of the yoyo. A very classic formula for a hybrid yoyo. Just like our more recent updated models, we want to make some specification changes.

Aligning with the recent trend of yoyos going wider, we decided to increase the width of the yoyo from 45.0mm to 46.5mm. The 1.5mm width increase is directly at the PC body, increasing the pure catch zone of the yoyo. We want to significantly up the weight of this hybrid yoyo to give it a more hefy feel unlike the papercut. To do this, we first used a large aluminum hub for both center weight and aesthetics, then made the stainless steel rim even heavier at over 21g per side. This increased the overall weight massively to around 66g.

The prototype is a complete success. The yoyo feels very powerful, yet not slow due to the massive center hub. It has a familiar feeling of papercut but with much more power and stability. Easily handling the longest vertical or horizontal combos. This is a rare occasion when the first prototype was so good, the yoyofriends player team is happy to go straight to production without any changes.

We decided to use the hypercut for the 9th anniversary yoyo as the hybrid construction allows us to make it budget friendly. A tradition for our anniversary releases.

For the naming and logo, we went with the prefix hyper. Hyper is very close to our previous prefix, ultra, in the cut series. Hypercut also represents the massive increase in power as it is by far the most powerful yoyo in the cut series. For the logo, we went with a futuristic font to spice it up in the cut series.

We hope you enjoy the hypercut, celebrating yoyofriends' 9th anniversary. Our first hybrid model that brings massive amounts of power and performance. We thank you for 9 years of support and we will keep on going.
